FORGE NEWSLETTER MAY 2011

Hi everyone,

Last time we sent out a newsletter the weather was cold and miserable but now the sun is shining, it’s warm and I am sure we all feel glad that the winter is over.

We had a lovely afternoon tea party during Easter that everyone enjoyed, lots to eat and drink – but no alcohol!!!

RNIB have brought out some new products and I have picked out those that I think may be of interest to you.

Talking MedCenter four alarm clock

Following the launch last year of the Talking MedCentre pill organiser the RNIB had been asked to introduce the alarm clock on its own. With four programmable alarms, it has an LCD display and supports people who take regular daily medication. Time and date announcements are in a female, American voice.  There are four large, coloured operating buttons on the top of the clock; green for time, blue for alarm check, yellow for clock light and red for acknowledging the alarm. Price:  £30.59

Radio controlled wall clock with large LCD display

A radio controlled wall clock which automatically updates the date and time from radio signals, this clock has a large rectangular LCD display with time digits measuring approximately two inches high. The display shows the date, month and day in one of six language choices, as well as the Moon phase and ambient temperature. It can either be wall mounted or positioned on a desk using the built-in stand.

STOP COLD CALLS

If you are fed up with cold calls offering you all sorts of things you don’t want or those really annoying ones where there is no-one there when you answer you can try registering your telephone number with the Telephone Preference Service on 0845 070 0707 or on line www.tpsonline.org.uk.  It can take up to three months to stop all calls.  You can do the same for unwanted mail by ringing 0845 7034599 or on line at www.mpsonline.org.uk.

COMPUTERS AT HOME

In the February newsletter we told you about a new service for those of you at home who would like to be able to use a computer.  It maybe that you just want to know how to turn a computer on and write a letter, have help with the internet or order your shopping on line.  If you have no computer at home we would bring a laptop.  A charge of £5 per hour would be levied for this service.  We have 2 places left and each person will get 6 hours of tuition. If you are interested or would like to know more please contact me.

OUTREACH

Both the outreach at Lydney and Newent were well attended.  We met some old Forge Members and people who came along to find out what Forge was all about and subsequently have become members.

FUNDRAISING

PENNIES

We have a large sweet jar in the centre in which we are asking people to put any spare pennies they may have.  If you don’t come into the centre very often why not save your pennies up and then bring them in

Summer Raffle

Prizes for the summer raffle include a camcorder, digital camera, MP3 player, Bar Butler, Hoover, tickets to look around the BBC Studios in Bristol and many more. With this newsletter you will find a book of raffle tickets – 5 tickets at £1 each.  Will you please either buy them yourself or sell them to friends and family.  A prepaid label for you to return the stubbs and money is included with this newsletter.

The open garden for FORGE, at Highnam Court, is on Sunday 17th July from 11.00am to 5.00pm.  If you know anyone who would like to help on this day please let me know.  We will be drawing the Summer Raffle during the afternoon.

EBAY

As you know most charities have a charity shop which raises funds for them, unfortunately Forge hasn’t the resources to rent and run a shop so we are going down the modern route and are going to sell items on our EBAY shop.  We have a volunteer who will do all the necessary admin for this, we just need you to let us have unwanted items to sell. We do not want large items like furniture, just small items that are easy to post.  You may have unwanted CD’s DVD’s, or grandchildren may   have PC/Xbox Games they no longer play with, costume jewellery, new perfume or gift sets that you don’t like. We can sell them to make money for Forge.

National Eye Health Awareness Week

Forge is having an open day on Wednesday 15th June for National Eye Health Awareness.  Forest talk, British Wireless for the Blind, Optelec and Forest Linkline will be in attendance.  Forge staff will be on hand to show you new equipment and offer advice on eye health.  Diet can have an impact on our health and our eyes are no different to any other part of the body. We will have some Recipe leaflets produced by the College of Optometrists on display and you will also have the opportunity to taste some of the recipes.  Do try and come along.

Best wishes

Jenny
